Feminist criminology has established itself as an independent and recognised field of research in the Anglo-American world. In Germany, however, it is still less established and thus falls short of its theoretical and practical potential. This article examines the potential benefits of a broader reception of feminist criminological perspectives for German (legal) science. After a conceptual introduction, the historical development of feminist criminology in the Anglo-American world is outlined through the so-called ‘waves of feminism’. The article then analyses the situation in Germany and shows that feminist impulses from international debates are sporadically incorporated, but not systematically embedded. Feminist legal studies is also addressed in order to identify overlaps and potential synergies. The aim is to show ways in which feminist criminology in Germany can become more theoretically grounded, institutionally anchored and exert greater influence on legal policy.
